QUINTE and PRINCE EDWARD

WHEN CANVAS WAS KING

by Robert B. Townsend - Embodying writings by C.H.J. Snider

The Municipality of the County of Prince Edward, the Island County of the Province of Ontario, possesses an unique heritage of maritime traditions. The Bay of Quinte and the Island County's maritime history is significant.

In 1784 the first settlers arrived in the County and the Bay of Quinte area, then a virgin land without roads. The Bay was their only highway. The population grew and prospered because it had a ready highway to export it's goods - the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River. Schooners and bay trader scows were used to transport grain, fish, lumber and other crops to market. During the nineteenth century the coast of Prince Edward County saw more commerce and more shipwrecks than any other piece of lake

No book that relates to the history of the Quinte region can be complete without recording stories of the scows and schooners in the old sailing days, and the county men who built and sailed them.

This early trade developed the sailing skills of County residents that dominated the Great Lakes well into the twentieth century.

We know too little of the hardships endured by the hardy men of sailing vessels in the nineteenth century. Prince Edward County has had more than its share of wrecks and disasters.

This book records many of the true stories descriptive of the rich maritime heritage of the Bay of Quinte and Prince Edward County; stories that may rival in interest anything told of the lands of chivalry and romance. There are stories of the shipwrecks along the south coast of the county; stories of some of the famous shipbuilders of the days when Canvas was King and when shipbuilding was a major industry in the County. Stories that highlight some of the famous Lake Captains from the County whose ski
